Computer backups

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I know a lot of people who have lost their valuable data when their computer hard drive crashed.  They were too confident that nothing bad would happen to them, or their computer, so they had not backed up their files.  When their computer crashed, they suffered a lot of data loss - they lost almost all of their files, and they were fit to be tied!

Ever since I started working on a computer, I have always backed up everything.  First it was onto floppy disks, then it was onto those little thumb drives.  Then it was onto external hard drives.

There is a PC data protection system available called an RAID system of data storage and backup protection that is something I think is a great system for individuals and small businesses that don’t want to use the methods I just mentioned, and who don’t want to use those internet-based storage systems.  This RAID system is a second hard drive, put right inside your own computer.  It constantly copies and does an automatic backup of your files, creating a mirror image.  So if your primary hard drive crashes, you will not have data loss, it is all right there ready to go!

Car running rough

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I’m afraid that I am going to have to put the car in the shop this week, it is running rough, and I don’t want to be out and about going to or from an errand and have it quit on me.  Especially when there are so many “dead spots” in the cell phone service out here.  It acts like it is running out of gas, but it has plenty of gas.  So I put a can of dry gas in it, thinking that maybe it was just some water in the tank, and it ran fine the next day, but started acting up again the day after.  So maybe it’s the fuel filter, or the fuel pump.  I don’t know, but it needs to be fixed!

Just one more aggravation, another thing sucking the money out of my wallet!

Roller blading

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Today I was rummaging around in the basement and found my old pair of rollerblades! It has been about ten years since I’ve used them, and to be perfectly honest I had even forgotten that I had them! I rummaged around a little bit more and found the elbow pads, knee pads and helmet. I took them all outside, put them on and roller-bladed my heart out in the driveway, up and down our little cul-de-sac. I got tired pretty quickly, but I sure had fun! I’ll bet I’ll be sore in the morning!

My grandfather

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

One of my girlfriends asked me how it came to be that my parents were wealthy.  So I explained that they got their money from my grandfather.  My grandfather was born in 1909.  He was from a very poor family; his parents abandoned him to be raised by his grandmother, who was also very poor.  She eked out her living telling fortunes.  My grandfather dropped out of school in the third grade to work for a construction company as a plumber’s helper.  By the time he was eighteen he was a master plumber and had started his own plumbing business.  Through shrewd real estate investments that he made with the profits from his plumbing business, he became a multi-millionaire by the time he was thirty-five.  When he died, he left everything he owned to my parents.

When I was telling my girl friend about my grandfather’s rags to riches story she told me that our family was a member of the Nouveau Riche club.  I asked her “what do you mean?”  She explained that term means “newly rich” and it means that the person started out poor and ended up wealthy.  So, I guess she’s right, at least when it pertains to my grandfather - he started out poor and ended up rich!  But the way my parents are spending that money, I’m going to be just as poor as he was, because I’m sure not going to be inheriting any of it!
