If you have a big family, I suspect you know all too well the stress of hosting a big family gathering. Whether it is a sit down dinner for everyone or a buffet or a pot luck, getting ready to feed a large crowd takes a lot of planning and energy.Time to roll up our sleeves and get cooking.

We hope to have a few of the closer family members stop by this afternoon and then we’ll host another get-together on New Year’s Day for the other family members who can’t make it here on Christmas Day.

Here’s hoping our holidays are warm and bright. Merry Christmas!

My cousin sent me an email today telling me that he is going to be going to Montreal Canada later this month. He is planning on spending two weeks there on business, and he was very excited about the prospect. He loves to travel, and loves checking out new restaurants. I told him to check out the new Restaurant Montréal website to find the restaurants he might be interested in going to while he is in the Montreal area. I was just looking at their website myself and was quite impressed with how many restaurants are listed. I was especially impressed that you could use a search wizard to help you sort through the types of cuisine, and the price level you would be willing to pay.

I was reading an article on the BBC.co.uk website that there is a big scandal regarding a company called the Sanlu Group selling tainted milk powder. The milk powder was tainted with a chemical called melamine, and has made many Chinese babies ill. This melamine is the same chemical that was found in pet food last year that killed thousands of pets! Melamine is linked to kidney failure, which is generally fatal. Nineteen people have been arrested in this new scandal; I hope that they are thrown into jail for the rest of their lives! This is a horrible thing to do – putting this kind of toxic chemical into the food supply!

I was watching a television show about cool kitchen appliances that will be coming out in the near future. One appliance that I saw that I really liked a lot (and would love to have) is a refrigerator that has a built in microwave oven into it. You can put your dinner in the microwave part of it in the morning before you go to work and set the timer. The refrigerator keeps the food cold and when the timer goes off the microwave starts, cooking the dinner! This is way cool! I can’t wait for this product to come out mainstream!

I was cooking dinner the other night. The meal was half cooked and I went to check it. As I opened the microwave, which happens to be one of my favorite tools for cooking, I discovered that the dish was still cold! I checked all of my settings on the microwave because sometimes I have the microwave set on defrost and I don’t always remember to turn it to cook. This was not the case. The microwave setting was on “high” but the food was not getting hot. I reset the microwave again, just to make sure that I hadn’t made a mistake and left it for another fifteen minutes. I could hear the microwave humming, and I went back to doing something else. Well, the timer went off, I went to the microwave, opened it up, took out the meal, it was still cold! I was very upset! I was HUNGRY! I didn’t have time for this! I immediately pulled a pan out of the cupboard, put the meal on the stove and poured some water in it, dropped in a couple of hot dogs and made a mental note to go to Wal-Mart in the morning and buy a new microwave!

My mother asked me to cook supper tonight, she wasn’t feeling very well. I asked her what she wanted me to cook and she said “whatever.” So I know she REALLY wasn’t feeling well. So I scrounged around the kitchen to see what I could come up with. Something a little bit different than what we eat. I felt like experimenting. So I found some skinless chicken breasts in the refrigerator that had a “use by” date of tomorrow, so I decided to pull them out and use them.

Then I went to the pantry and was looking around. I found a can of Healthy Request Cream of Chicken soup, and a can of Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom soup. I pulled them out. I rinsed off the chicken and cut it into strips and put them in a covered casserole dish. Then I opened the cans of soup and poured them over the chicken, put the lid on and cooked it at 350 for a half hour. While that was cooking I cooked up some minute rice, some dinner rolls and some veggies and we had a great meal! I’ll have to cook that again sometime! Definitely put that in my recipe box!

I was reading an article on msnbc.nbc.com about a woman who planted a dead laboratory rat in her meal at an upscale restaurant in Grand Chute MI last April and then claimed that it came in her meal. She demanded that the restaurant pay her $500,000 to “keep quiet.” She said if she wasn’t paid, she would alert the media.

Well, this woman was pretty stupid because the rat she planted in her food was a white rat. And it had been microwaved. A SMART person would know that if you were to “find” a rat in a restaurant meal it would be the “found in the wild” color of rats – a brownish gray/black. And the restaurant doesn’t cook with microwaves, so it was obviously dead when it was added to the plate.

So, the woman has been arrested and charged with extortion, disorderly conduct, and resisting an officer. What a LOSER!

I heard on the news that the salmonella warning on tomatoes has been lifted now, but that the warning is now applying to some hot peppers. I haven’t had to cut back on my tomatoes at all, we’ve been eating them out of our garden for the past couple of weeks – there is nothing as yummy as your very own home grown tomatoes! I’m glad that the warning has been lifted though, it is a shame that so many people have gotten sick from tainted food lately. I think that something needs to be done to crack down on these types of things, more than public warnings, something concrete. I’d like to hear more about what is happening to prevent this type of thing from happening again.

It was over a year ago I think that the news stories were talking about how the butter flavored microwave popcorn can give you lung cancer. I was just remembering the story because I’m a little bit hungry and was thinking about popping a bag of microwave popcorn! I thought I’d research it a little bit first, and it seems that the whole scare is because the factory workers were having respiratory problems due to constant exposure to high levels of a chemical found in that type of popcorn. To the best of my knowledge there is no evidence of harm from popping a bag at home once a month or so, although I did find one article that said a man suffered lung damage from popping microwave popcorn several times a day for several years.
