Wow, I have been hearing that the Komen Foundation has changed their decision regarding their funding to Planned Parenthood. I found that interesting because when the uproar started I thought I heard on the news that someone high up in the foundation had been quoted as saying that they would not cave into political pressure. And yet I also had been hearing that the reason that they had withdrawn the funds was due to political pressure. Whatever their reasons, I’m glad that they changed their minds and will be supporting Planned Parenthood.

Learning about the silver eagle

My father was showing me his collection of coins last night, and was telling me how he first developed an interest in collecting coins. He was telling me that his father gave him an uncirculated silver eagle that had been turned into a bolo tie and told him to keep it in a safe place because it was valuable. He showed me the tie, and told me that when he passes on that I need to realize that it is valuable and don’t just put it in a lawn sale.

What do you think about the uproar over the Komen Foundation Center discontinuing their financial grants to Planned Parenthood? All of my Facebook friends are very upset over it because the money that Planned Parenthood was getting was being used to pay for mammograms for women who were too poor to pay for them by themselves. Personally I think that is a real shame, and the excuses that the Komen Foundation is making do not ring true. Very sad day for women.

Planning a trip to Florida

As soon as my father can get the Airstream out of the motor home repair repair shop we are planning to hit the road for a long overdue vacation in Florida. Disney World has always been one of our favorite vacation destinations, and we are going to spend an entire week there this time! I love going to Epcot Center and the the MGM park. I can hardly wait!

Observation

My aunt was telling me about the progress of her worker’s compensation case, and was complaining that her attorney has avoided talking to her for over a year. She has called his office many times asking for a telephone appointment because his office is over an hour’s drive from home, and the office keeps denying her the appointment. Well suddenly, out of the blue the attorney’s office has called HER asking for an appointment to come see the attorney. My aunt again requested a telephone appointment because of the hardship the drive would cause.

Wouldn’t you know it, now that the attorney WANTS to talk with HER, he will accept a telephone appointment! I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that she changed her $100 month payment on her bill to only $1 a month payment. What do you think?

What would you do if you got an email from your sister telling you that she has been invited to a good friend’s wedding, that her sons were invited to attend as well, but she was going to decline the invitation because she didn’t feel that she could afford to buy her sons the new clothes and new boys dress shoes to go to the wedding? I’ll tell you what I did, I sent her $100 and told her to take the boys to buy themselves some new shoes. I hope they have a good time at the wedding.

Negative campaigning

One of the things that disgust me about political campaigns is how the candidates have raised money that is put into a Super Pac and then they turn the money over to someone who is very supportive of the candidate and then the Super Pac runs a lot of negative ads against the competitors. I really hate all of the negative campaigning, and am inclined to vote against the candidate that is sponsoring the negative campaign. I wish everyone would just play nice!

Twins on the way!

Going to a baby shower can be very educational, as well as a lot of fun. Last Saturday I attended the baby shower of my best friend Sherri. She is expecting twins; a boy and a girl! Twins run in her family, Sherri has two younger brothers that a fraternal twins. Let me tell you, if I ever found out that I was going to have twins I think that I would freak out! In a good way. Having more than twins, though, that would be a completely different story!

Because Sherri is also having fraternal twins, one of each gender, the baby shower had gifts for both genders black and red boy crib bedding for little Davey, and lilac crib bedding for little Abbey. Sherri is lucky enough to be able to a large enough apartment that after the babies get a little bit older they will be able to have their own bedrooms, but in the beginning they will share space in the nursery. That way Sherri can utilize one changing table, one dresser, one tube of skin zinc cream concept laboratories, one bottle of baby powder.

I’ve already volunteered to come help out with the babies a couple of afternoons a week for the first couple of months so Sherri can get a little bit of rest. I love newborn babies; I could rock them and smell their freshly washed hair and powdered little bodies for hours on end!

It was arson

Last night I went to a Ruritan meeting and the guest speaker was the chief of the local fire department. We enjoyed a nice meal of ham, sweet potatoes, green tossed salad, baked beans, wheat rolls and for dessert apple pie with a scoop of ice cream. During the fire chief’s presentation he was talking about how that church that burnt down a few months ago was determined to be arson. The neighbor next door to the church had said that he had heard an explosion and when he looked out of his window the church was fully engulfed in flames.

No one has been arrested for the church burning, and there is speculation about whether it was burnt down for the insurance. At least no one was inside the church when it happened, and none of the fire fighters were injured fighting the fire.

Son grows up

My son has grown up way too quickly. As cliché as it may sound, it seems like only yesterday that I brought him home from the hospital. Now he is off at college and I am not sure how to handle it. He is a great kid, but I was not ready for him to leave. I tried to help him get settled into his new place, but he wanted to do it all himself. I tried to give him advice on utilities, but he said it was Just Energy Offers and no big deal. He was confident he could handle it himself. I should be happy that I raised an independent child. I spent his entire life teaching him to do things on his own. I don’t know why I am so surprised that he is doing them on his own. He is a great kid and I am proud of him. I just wonder if I will ever be needed again or if he no longer needs his mother.

The church burned down

My folks and I were driving down The Springs Road and saw the remains of the church that burned down a couple of days ago. Rumor has it that arson is suspected. The church had been for sale for a number of months and then one night it burned down. We did not hear if there were any casualties or not. Regardless, I can’t help but wonder about the story behind that. I never knew much about that church; never knew why it was listed for sale. I often wondered if the congregation had acquired a different building and why. Was it being occupied by homeless people that were using some kind of open flame to heat the place and it got out of control? Or was it set deliberately, in order to collect on an insurance policy, or just because an arsonist likes to set fires and watch places burn down.

Whatever the reason, I find it sad that any church would be burned down. I hope no one was injured.

Roller skating

I’ve been invited to a roller skating party this weekend, and I’ve been trying to decide whether to go to it or not. It has been at least ten years since I’ve been on roller skates, and I’m wondering how much time I’ll be spending on my butt if I decide to go. My previous experiences at roller rinks has been that there are always a few people that cut you off and trip you up. I wonder if the rink has roller blades available to rent, or just the traditional skates; I think I’d like to try my hand at blading if I go to it. I wonder how sore my muscles will be after I go!

Puppy sitting

My neighbor went out of town for the Holidays and asked me to take care of her puppy while she was gone. The puppy is a cute little pug; he reminds me of the little dog in the movie Men in Black. I’m not a big fan of dogs with the pushed-in noses; they have a reputation for snoring and to be perfectly honest I think that they look like they have been fighting in the boxing ring! Not being a fan of boxing, I’m not inclined to be attracted to anything that looks like it has been in a fight. Yeah, I know, I’m strange, what can I say? Anyway, the little guy is a riot; he loves to play tug of war with me.

Lesson learned – just say “no”

Today my Dad asked me to go with him to Home Depot to help him bring some sheets of plywood home. I thought this was going to be a quick trip into town and back again, so I said yes. Much to my chagrin, the trip was not just to Home Depot, it was also to Auto Advance. “I’ll only be a couple of minutes, honey, I just need to buy some oil and a filter.” So I waited in the car, reading the Sunday paper, for forty-five minutes! Finally I decided I’d better go inside and find him and drag him out of there. I found him standing in line at the check-out counter, with much more than some oil and a filter in his hands!

The cashier was incredibly slow in processing the order, and I was getting tired and cranky, anxious to get home before even getting to Home Depot! We headed off to Home Depot, where once inside he met an old friend that he hadn’t seen in months and so he had to chat with him for a half hour before even getting through the door! So I went into Home Depot and started shopping from the list we had made up, to get things going.

Lesson learned, next time Dad says “would you come with me to…….” if I want to get home within the same four hour period of time, the answer should be NO!
