In the beginning, there were file extensions
As I was saying, I was helping to teach my younger cousin about computers. So I spent some time explaining to her that file extensions are the three letters (or in some cases four letters) that follow the “period” or “dot” after the file name of whatever file the computer user is creating, saving, modifying, etc. For the most part different software programs create and use different file extensions, although some software programs are capable of saving the work under several different file extensions. For example, MSWord documents usually save the documents under the “.doc” file extension, but you are given the option of saving the document under “.xml, .mht, .mhtml, .htm, .html, .dot” file extensions. These different file extensions allow the document to be opened using other programs, or be published on the Internet. The file extension DWG is used by a few different computer aided design software programs such as AutoCad, Solidworks, and PoweCad.
