May Day
May Day is an ancient holiday that used to be observed around the globe, even here in the public schools of the United States. Festivals and Maypole Dances were held to honor the halfway point between the spring solstice and summer equinox. I read a really great article about the origins of May Day at http://www.salmonriver.com/words/nancy/maia.html. I understand that the public schools in the US stopped celebrating May Day when Russia made a big deal about celebrations and demonstrations of their military might on the same day around back in the 1960’s. I was told that “we” (the United States) did not want to appear to be supportive of Russia back then, so “we” stopped celebrating May Day. I think that is a real shame!
